The road to the battlefield of Passchendaele

This walking route takes you on a historical journey through the Westhoek, where you can discover the heritage of the First World War. We start in Ypres, a city that played a central role in the war and where the scars of that time are still visible today.

From Ypres, we take the bus to Passchendaele, a small village that was the scene of fierce fighting during the war. After arriving in Passchendaele, we begin our walk back to Ypres, along historic sites, cemeteries, and memorials.

One of the highlights of the route is the Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest British military cemetery in the world. A cemetery where nearly 12,000 fallen soldiers are buried. An impressive place to pause and reflect on the horrors of the war.

Along the way, we pass the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917, where you can learn more about the Battle of Passchendaele and its impact on the region. The museum offers an extensive collection of artifacts and exhibitions that tell the story of the war.

During the walk, we will also have the chance to enjoy the rural landscape, along fields and forests that were also the scene of intense fighting. Along the way, we pass memorial stones, trenches, and other remnants of this Great War, reminding us of the courage and sacrifice of the soldiers who fought here for the freedom of others.

After a fascinating and emotional journey, we finally return to Ypres, where we can end the day with a visit to the famous Menin Gate and its daily 'Last Post'; as a tribute to the fallen soldiers.
