Grafschafter Traces Search - On the Trails of the Bronze Age

The area around Uelsen is fascinating in many ways. It consists mostly of gravel and sandy soils, is partially very hilly, interspersed with forests and meadows, and strongly influenced by the last Ice Age. In addition, numerous archaeological finds have shown that the first people already lived in this area during the Stone and Bronze Ages. In 1840, a golden cup was found at Spöllberg, northeast of Uelsen, which could be dated to the Bronze Age. The cup is still considered the oldest gold vessel ever found in Europe.

Visitors can experience the Bronze Age up close and participate at the Bronze Age farm in Uelsen. It was built according to archaeological knowledge and offers an authentic look into the past. Other historical highlights include the four old mills in and around Uelsen. The oldest of the mills is the Schoneveld Mill in Wilsum, which was probably built in the 13th century.
