San Gimignano is famous for its skyline of towers like skyscrapers.
The aim is to see all the towers of the city and as many other sights as possible.
These towers are: Campanile della Collegiata, Torri degli Ardinghelli, Torre dei Becci, Torre Campatelli, Torre Chigi, Torre dei Cugnanesi, Torre del Diavolo, Torre Ficherelli or Ficarelli, Torre Grossa, Torre di Palazzo Pellari, Casa-torre Pesciolini, Torre Pettini , Torre Rognosa, Torri dei Salvucci.
In some texts, the number of towers is reduced from 16 to 14 : in general, the bell tower of the Collegiate Church and the Pesciolini House tower are removed from the count, which have different characteristics from the others.
Free parking at Via Dante , 53038 San Gimignano, Tuscany, Italy.
Through a tunnel under the road we can enter the city at the Porta San Matteo . We first go around the ramparts where we get a nice view over the city. We pass the Monastero di S. Girolamo and get a nice view of the towers of San Gimignano when we come from the 'Fonti Medievali' .
After this first loop we will come back to the Porta San Matteo . The Via San Matteo is a busy shopping street that takes us to the Piazza della Cisterna with its much-photographed well.
Passing the Torre dei Becci and the Torre Campatelli we go to the Porta San Giovanni. We are treated to a beautiful view of Tuscany.
We return past a few churches and walk into San Gimignano1300 where a beautiful model of the city can be seen.
Via the ruins of the Parco della Rocca urban park with its panoramic view, we arrive at the Piazza del Duomo where six towers form the majestic contours. With that we have seen all the towers of San Gimignano.
Be sure to check out the sights on site! They explain what to see.
