Pupil school Nieuwersluis

By Royal Decree of 27 January 1877, the Pupillenschool was established in Nieuwersluis, which was under the patronage of King William III. The school was headed by an infantry captain, who was the school's director. The school fell under the immediate orders of the Inspector of Infantry.

Children of soldiers between the ages of twelve and fourteen could be admitted to the Pupillenschool in Nieuwersluis. However, children of citizens were also welcome for monetary compensation. The maximum capacity was initially set at 50 pupils. This was soon expanded to 100 pupils and in 1881 to 250 pupils. The pupils' wages amounted to f 0.30 per day.
Herman Stieljes, nephew of Gerard Lückens, was one of the pupils of this school.

The pupils were taught reading, writing, Dutch language, arithmetic, history, geography and religion of their choice. In addition, education was given in military regulations, exercises, gymnastics, skating, swimming, drilling with artillery and fire sprayer and if possible in some crafts that were useful in the army.

Before the age of sixteen, the students had to leave the school to go to further education, such as in the infantry the Instruction Battalion or in the artillery the Instruction Company. They also became tambour or horn blowers in a corps.

Over time, the shortage of volunteers and executives decreased. As a result, by Royal Decree, the Pupilenschool was dissolved on 1 January 1896. In the 18th anniversary of the Pupillenschool, about 1600 young people received their education there.
