Assel-Kootwijkerveen

Assel is a hamlet of 12 houses in the municipality of Apeldoorn in the Dutch province Gelderland. It is located about 2 kilometers from Hoog Buurlo and Radio Kootwijk and approximately 10 kilometers west of Apeldoorn. It is separated from the village Hoog Soeren by the Asselse Heide.

Previously, Assel was known for its iron extraction. The ground is full of (iron) slag.

In Assel there is a Roman Catholic chapel from 1941 (the Holy Spirit Chapel), next to which is the natural burial site Westerwolde. In Assel, there is also the Don Bosco Center, formerly the Mariahoeve. This center provides space for reflection, education, and relaxation for young people and adults engaged in youth work. The center is run by Salesian priests, the monastic congregation of Don Bosco (s.d.b.). A number of Salesians form a community here. Adjacent to the center are fields that create an agricultural enclave within the wooded surroundings.

Assel had its own train stop since 1876: stop Assel. The station was used by, among others, King Willem III and later by Prince Hendrik, who could travel from there to the Aardhuis, a hunting chalet in the Crown Domain built for Willem III in 1861. During the construction of the transmitting station Radio Kootwijk, started in 1918, a special single-track railway line was laid from Assel to Radio Kootwijk for transporting building materials. Assel currently has no connection to public transport, although the hamlet is crossed by the Amsterdam - Apeldoorn railway line, referred to as the Eastern Railway to Zutphen.

Near Assel is a nature campsite and an inn. This inn is frequently visited in the summer by visitors to the Asselse Heide, a nature reserve where one can especially see a lot of wildlife in the evening.
