The fortress of Swinoujście is a originally Prussian fortification at the mouth of the Swine River into the Baltic Sea, which was intended to protect the shipping route from the Oder and the Swine into the Baltic Sea. Due to the strategic importance of the Swine mouth, the Swine redoubt was constructed during the Thirty Years' War, which was repeatedly the target of military confrontations in the following centuries. In the second half of the 19th century, the Prussian army expanded the facilities into a fortress. After the fortress survived World War II without major damage, the post-war period saw the deterioration of the buildings, which were partially used by the Soviet army. With the withdrawal of the Soviet army in the early 1990s, the military use of the fortifications came to an end. The preserved fortifications are located northeast of the city of Swinoujście in present-day Poland on the islands of Usedom and Wolin and serve as tourist attractions.
During the Thirty Years' War, Pomerania was occupied by imperial troops in 1628. Colonel Hebron ordered the construction of a redoubt at the location of Swine as protection against enemy landings, for which the surrounding villages were conscripted for labor services. Danish troops under King Christian IV captured the redoubt, occupied by 300 men, in early August after several days of assault. However, after their defeat in the Battle of Wolgast, the Danes withdrew. On June 26, 1630, the Swedish army under King Gustav II Adolf landed at Peenemünde. The imperial troops on Usedom were not numerically capable of holding the redoubts at Peenemünde and Swine.
