Starting point of the Monte Toboggan Ride (Carreiros do Monte)

This is a unique way to get back down: in a wicker sled , from Monte towards Funchal. Two "carreiros" in white with straw hats steer and brake the sled with their rubber soles. In the past, this was a real means of transport. Now it is a piece of living heritage and a fun experience. The ride takes about ten minutes and stops in Livramento. From there, you walk back, take a taxi, or walk back.

You start in Monte, at the foot of the 74-step staircase of the Igreja do Monte. The official starting point is Caminho do Monte, Entrada 151, Porta 4, 9050-288 Monte. The easiest way to get there is by cable car from the Zona Velha. From the top station, it is a 5 to 10-minute walk to the starting point.

The ride is about 2 km long, takes about 10 minutes, and ends in Livramento. You do not arrive in the center of Funchal, but in Livramento, at Caminho do Monte 82/84, about halfway up the mountain. From there, you take bus 19, a taxi, or walk down the steep section.
