Kraenepoel

The Kraenepoel, a pond of 22 ha with surrounding forests, is the last of the dozens of field ponds with which the Bulskampveld, the vast heathland from Aalter to Bruges, was dotted in the Middle Ages. It originated from the 13th century when the inhabitants dug up fieldstones or cut peat. The remaining wells were used for fish farming. The name 'Kraenepoel' still refers to the old Dutch name of peat: kraene or krane. It is protected as a nature reserve as part of Natura 2000. During severe periods of frost, the Kraenepoel sometimes freezes partially or completely and due to its shallow depth, this is often the first pond on which skating takes place.
