GR 5 North Sea - Mediterranean | Flanders

NL - The GR 5 is the symbol in the network of white-red marked GR hiking paths, which stretches from the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France to Spain and Portugal. The GR 5 connects the North Sea to the Mediterranean and is more than 2,000 km long.

In Flanders, walking on the GR 5 is not difficult. Most of the time, you walk along flat paths and country roads, but there is also a lot of variation: forests and heathland in the Antwerp Kempen; the great abbeys of Westmalle, Tongerlo, Averbode, and Herkenrode; waters in the Demerbroeken and the Wijers as well as forests in the Limburg Hoge Kempen. However, the GR 5 offers a lot of variety in the surroundings: forests and heathland in the Kempen (Antwerp), the great abbeys of Westmalle, Tongerlo, Averbode, and Herkenrode, ponds and wetlands in the Demerbroeken and the Wijers, as well as forests in the Hoge Kempen (Limburg). The Flemish section ends in the Meuse valley, just behind Maastricht, where one finds oneself at the foot of the Ardennes near the historic fortress of Eben-Emael.
