Idar-Oberstein is internationally recognized as Germany's gemstone capital and even one of the world's leading cities for gemstones and jewelry. This is due to both its unique natural history and rich artisanal tradition.
Millions of years ago, volcanic activity took place in the Nahe region. As this lava cooled, unique minerals formed in the cavities within the rock, including agate, amethyst, jasper, carnelian, and rock crystal. These gemstones were found in the surrounding hills of Idar-Oberstein.
The Steinkaulenberg in Idar-Oberstein is unique because it's the only gemstone mine in Europe that can be visited. Here, you can witness firsthand how people dug for stones for centuries.
The discovery of gemstone veins led to a flourishing mining industry from the Middle Ages onward. In the 15th and 16th centuries, dozens of grinding mills were built along the Idarbach to process the gemstones. The location on the Nahe River was crucial. The water was used to power the grinding mills, essential for processing the hard stones into jewelry and utensils.
After being mined, the stones were traditionally cut and processed in countless workshops and mills. This led to a vast amount of knowledge and specialization in the craft.
When the local gemstone supply ran out around the 18th century, the region plunged into crisis. German emigrants then discovered new deposits in Brazil and began importing these stones to Idar-Oberstein. Thus, the industry not only survived but became even larger and more renowned than ever.
