The Kurt-Schumacher Barracks in Hanover is a barracks of the German Armed Forces and was until 2015 the headquarters of the 1st Panzer Division. It is named after the former chairman of the SPD, Kurt Schumacher, and is a protected monument.
The main building of the barracks on Hans-Böckler-Allee was constructed in 1937 as part of the rearmament of the Wehrmacht and has been used exclusively for military purposes since then. Before World War II, the General Command of the XI Corps of the Wehrmacht was based here. It was partially heavily damaged by bombs during the war, and after the end of the war, soldiers from the 4th American Infantry Division initially moved into the building complex; in 1945, it was taken over by British Major Stirling. The complex was named "Stirling House" after him. The district military government of the British resided in the building. At the founding of the Federal Republic in 1949, "Stirling House" was still the seat of the British military headquarters. In 1956, the Military Region Command II of the German Armed Forces was established and initially stationed in the Prinz-Albrecht Barracks in Hanover-Bothfeld, but it moved into the barracks in 1958 due to lack of space. In return, the British left the location. Until 2001, the site remained home to the Military Region Command II. From 1994 onwards, the barracks served as the location of the merged staff from Military Region Command II and the 1st Panzer Division. In 2001, the Military Region Command II was disbanded. The staff of the 1st Panzer Division remained at the site. The State Command of Lower Saxony also has its seat in the barracks. As part of the restructuring of the German Armed Forces, it was announced in October 2011 that the staff of the 1st Panzer Division would be moved to Oldenburg, which took place in 2015.
