The listed protected parish church of St. Martin is a Catholic parish church in Upper Swabian Illertissen. It belongs to the Diocese of Augsburg. Its patronage festival is on November 11, St. Martin's Day.
Due to the choice of Saint Martin of Tours as the church patron, it can be assumed that a predecessor church was built around 750 to 800. Only the base of the medieval tower has been preserved from this church. Around 1220, possessions of the Benedictine Abbey of Einsiedeln can be documented in Illertissen, which was a prince-abbey from the 13th century until 1803. In 1547, Erhard Vöhlin established the northern side chapel. In 1590, the church was replaced by a presumably larger new building. The tower was raised around the octagon. In 1768, the church underwent a major interior renovation, during which the altars were adorned in gold and white. The sacristy was built onto the south side of the choir in 1788 and was demolished in 1958. During another renovation, the west gable collapsed in 1830. The galleries and parts of the nave were destroyed in the process. In the renewal, the lower coffered ceiling and the two-story gallery were installed. In the northern chapel, the crypt chapel of the Vöhlins, a fire broke out in 1883, damaging parts of the partially late Gothic epitaphs. The pulpit, which was located near the chapel, also burned down. From 1958 to 1960, two choir buildings were added to the south and north according to plans by Thomas Wechs.
