Parroquia San Hipolito - Cordoba

The monarch Alfonso XI promised at the Battle of Salado that, if he were victorious, he would build a collegiate church in honor of Saint Hippolytus, on whose day, August 13, he was born in 1311.

Of the Collegiate Church of San Hipólito, built by Alfonso XI, only the chevet and the transept remain.

Work began on the new church in 1729 .

In 1773 it was decided to build a new tower. The design consisted of a tall tower with four sections, only two of which were built, as it has survived to this day.

For a long time , Kings Alfonso XI and Fernando IV were kept in the presbytery of the church in simple wooden boxes, where they were displayed to visitors. In 1846, the Monument Commission had to build the current red marble tombs . On the Gospel side is the tomb of Alfonso XI, while on the Epistle side is the tomb of Fernando IV.
