Le pont Stanislas

Stanislas Bridge
Mirecourt has always been separated, for many centuries, by "Le Madon", a peaceful river allowing many leisure activities, walking, fishing, ... but which has its drawbacks for the residents during its high floods.

In order to facilitate the settlement of craftsmen and the extension of the population on the left bank of this river, which was very shallow in ordinary times, wooden footbridges were built, but they could not withstand the rapid rise in water levels, nor was a stone structure linking the suburb to the town, which was destroyed in 1572 and rebuilt a little further upstream in 1578. In 1685, the bridge was washed away again and rebuilt in stone (it allowed the passage to the mill), but it did not withstand the floods of 1734. In 1734, the latter was washed away once again following a memorable flood with all the other bridges in the area. It is then, that the Duke of Lorraine, Stanislas Leszczynski, who sent the engineer Le Pan on the spot, had this beautiful work built at his own expense in 1747, with its 5 arches, which has since resisted all floods and that we can still admire, hence its name of Stanislas Bridge, classified Historic Monument in 1982.
