Gasselte

Gasselte is a village in the municipality of Aa en Hunze in the Dutch province of Drenthe, halfway between the villages of Gieten and Borger, located on the Hondsrug. The village has 1,900 inhabitants. Until the municipal reorganization on January 1, 1998, the village was the main town of the municipality of the same name.
Although traces of habitation around Gasselte have been found from prehistory, the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age, the first discovered settlement in this area dates from the period of the 9th to the 12th century. Finds of beaded necklaces, fragments of a ring brooch, and a bracelet, discovered in 1877 during the plowing of land by Rev. Sanders in Gasselte, point towards a settlement in the 6th and 7th centuries.
