This bicycle tour is designed to take you to Wat Kai, also known as the Monastery of the Chicken, in Han Sang, Bang Pahan District, Ayutthaya Province. At Wat Kai, you will see the depiction of Buddhist Hell. There are 31 planes of existence divided into three worlds (Traiphum): the Immaterial World, the Fine-Material World, and the Sensuous World. The Sensuous World contains 11 realms, with our world being the seventh and final favorable realm, balancing pleasure and pain. The next four realms are considered bad, with the last one being Hell—a realm of unimaginable suffering and anguish. This Hell is not eternal, like all other realms, but temporary. In Buddhism, the Hell or netherworld is called Niraya (Thai: Narok), meaning the downward path. Wat Kai provides a vivid and colorful view of Niraya. The temple is also famous for its monkeys, which can be fed with food available on site.
The bicycle trail is approximately 45 km long and is paved throughout. It begins at the Elephant Kraal and takes you through the Pho Sam Ton Fields toward the old Bang Kaeo River, which is now a large irrigation canal. You will follow the canal until you reach Wat Kai. After visiting the monastery, you continue further north and then turn onto the right bank of the Lopburi River near Maha Rat. From there, you bike south again to the Elephant Kraal. The trail mostly consists of quiet roads without traffic and offers a rural landscape.
Tips and Warnings
Bicycles can be rented at various locations on Soi 2 Naresuan Rd, which is the starting point of this tour. Bike rental costs about 40-50 baht ($1.5) per day, making bike touring an affordable way to explore the city. Ayutthaya’s terrain is mostly flat and easy to ride, but many streets and side roads are poorly marked, so use the map to make navigation easier.
Be cautious, as traffic in and around Ayutthaya can be chaotic and dangerous. Motor vehicles often fail to see cyclists and pedestrians, so you must stay alert for them. Motorcycles are a particular hazard and a common cause of local accidents. Dogs and potholes can also pose dangers, especially in remote areas. The weather can be very hot, so make sure to drink plenty of fluids and wear sunscreen. It is not advisable to drive at night due to poor lighting and the occasional reckless behavior of some drivers.
Bicycle thefts are rare in Ayutthaya, but backpacks and cameras are occasionally stolen. It's best to keep valuables on you when visiting historic sites along the route.
In case of emergency or accident: Contact the Ayutthaya Tourist Police Station at (035) 241-446, (035) 242-352, or 1155.
