Metzeral, het oudste dorp van de Grande Vallée met 1.109 inwoners, heeft een rijke geschiedenis. Het werd voor het eerst genoemd in 817 en de naam is waarschijnlijk afgeleid van het Latijnse woord voor "kleine droge stenen muur". Het dorp kreeg autonomie in 1801 en floreerde in de 19e eeuw dankzij de textielindustrie. Metzeral, slachtoffer van de Eerste Wereldoorlog, is nu een centrum voor toerisme, met name met de bronwaterbottelfabriek "Valon". De kerk van de Emm, gebouwd als eerbetoon aan de doden van de oorlog van 1914-18, is een bedevaartsoord. De militaire begraafplaats in Chêne Millet herinnert aan de verwoestingen van de oorlog. De regio biedt vele wandelingen langs emblematische plaatsen.
