Das Hageland kennt viele Hügelzüge. Dafür gibt es eine geologische Erklärung, denn hier befinden sich stark eingeschnittene Zeugenberge des Diestiansees, benannt nach der Stadt Diest. Dieser Diestiansee überschwemmte insbesondere den Norden von Belgien in der Zeit des Tertiärs (vor 70 bis 3 Millionen Jahren). Der Sand wurde durch seine Zusammensetzung stark verkittet und zu harten Sandbänken geformt. Bei der regelmäßigen Freilegung dieser Sandbänke ist das Glaukonit verwittert und der Sand aneinander verrostet, wodurch eine starke Schicht aus EisenSandstein entstanden ist.
