The Malpaís de Güímar Special Nature Reserve is a nature reserve in the southeast of Tenerife. The Güimar Badland is an area of remarkable ecological importance. Since 1987 it has been included in the so-called protected nature reserves.
This protected area, which extends over approximately 290 hectares , constitutes an exclusively volcanic landscape consisting of a cone of considerable size and a series of AA type lava flows that flowed to the sea. The materials that gave rise to this landscape are basaltic in nature and have a geological age not exceeding 5,000 years.
This area has a regime of scarce rainfall , it suffers from the action of the trade winds that come from the northeast and which soften the temperatures; these average between 17 °C in January and 23 °C in August. It also has very high sunshine (2500 hours/year) and a relative humidity of about 70%.
The area is a well-known hiking area . Various walks are indicated with signs and posts with iron arrows indicating the direction. Various information boards provide information about the area.
