From the 11th century onwards, the territory of Ghent expanded as various feudal areas were annexed. An important attraction for the expansion to the west was undoubtedly the establishment of a count's residence on the western bank of the Leie. This count's domain contained, in addition to the castle Gravensteen, a settlement (the Oudburg, a part of Patershol) and an outer courtyard (currently Sint-Veerleplein). This whole was annexed during the course of the 13th century.
