Campo Santo Cemetery

The Père-Lachaise of Ghent. That’s how Campo Santo in Visitatiestraat in Sint-Amandsberg is sometimes referred to. This nickname is due to the fact that sculptors, painters, writers, and other celebrities, both Catholic and liberal, found their final resting place on this nineteen meter high hill, named after a cemetery in Rome. In the seventh century, Saint Amandus is said to have preached here, and the late Baroque chapel at the highest point is dedicated to him. The trees that stand there have witnessed the first funeral that took place here in 1847. Wilfried Martens is the eternal neighbor of Gustave and Karel Van de Woestijne, Frans Masereel, Jan Frans Willems, Filip De Pillecijn, Marc Sleen, Jan Hoet and Luc De Vos. Visit Gent created a ground plan with the location of 49 graves of notable deceased. This allows you to stroll through the cemetery.
