Spontin

The castle of Spontin is located in the center of Spontin, a part of Yvoir. With its massive walls, its towers crowned with slate spires, and its moat with a drawbridge, it quite well matches the image that one generally forms of a medieval castle.

Spontin was built in a bend of the Bocq, whose water flows around the castle along some tinkling waterfalls. The lords of the castle belonged to the noble family of the Beauforts. The castle of Spontin lay in a 'dangerous' place, in the border area between the county of Namur and the prince-bishopric of Liège, and although it withstood attacks from armies from Liège, Dinant, Burgundy, and France, it has always stood firm.
Since the fall of the Ancien Régime, the valuable castle has constantly changed hands, until it was finally purchased by the NV Société du Château de Spontin, which entrusted the management to the non-profit organization Les cimaises de Spontin. Due to the mismanagement of former owners and a shocking lack of interest from the Walloon Region, the castle is currently in a worrying state of neglect.
It is clearly visible here what changes a knight's castle has undergone between the 12th and the 18th centuries. Inside, there are two Gothic fireplaces and an interesting well that was carved into a wall.
