From around 1960 to 2004, the notorious Camping Cosmos was located on this strip of dunes. The campsite owes its fame also and especially to the fact that it served as a location and subject for the namesake film by Jan Bucquoy in 1996. Today, the campsite has been closed because the area is actually indicated as a nature reserve in the spatial planning plans. And not without reason: this dune belt, also known as the sea-defending dunes, is closest to the sea and is therefore of immense importance in protecting the hinterland from flooding. That is why the Flemish government purchased the dunes and removed all traces of the campsite. The sand was even sifted to remove as much debris and waste as possible and to restore and allow the dunes to grow back to their natural state as much as possible. Additionally, measures have been taken to allow for limited recreation, and the area can be explored via walking paths. The battery bunkers from World War II are also freely accessible.
