The Redoubt of Kapellen or the stronghold of Kapellen is a so-called railway fort, as it was built to protect the Antwerp-Roosendaal railway.
In 1875, Brialmont conceived the plan to construct a large belt of forts around Antwerp, in addition to the small belt. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough money at the time to build the belt all at once. Ultimately, it was decided to build a fort each time there was enough money available. In 1892, sufficient funds were finally allocated to construct a small railway fort on the Antwerp-Roosendaal railway near Kapellen, on the territory of the municipality of Ekeren. Under the law of May 27, 1892, the fort was established. The works took place from 1893 to 1897, and the domes were cast in 1900. Without armament, the fort cost 1.2 million gold francs. Until 1914, nothing special happened at the fort. In 1914, the domes were blown up by the Belgian army. During the interbellum, a small machine gun bunker was established at the main front. Now, the fort is part of the Kapellen barracks and is in military possession.
