The cemetery of Reningelst and the 'Extension' were used from March 1915 until the 'New Military Cemetery' was inaugurated in November 1915. Half of the casualties buried on the 'Extension' perished at Hill 60 in Zillebeke after the attempt by the German troops to recapture the artificially constructed hill with chlorine gas on 1 May 1915. The 5th Division of the British Army held out, but more than 300 soldiers had to be transferred to one of the Field Ambulances behind the front with gas poisoning.
