Mill Ter Geest and Te Zande

The protected mill Ter Geest and Te Zande is a unique site: you can find three forms of energy generation in one place. The mill naturally represents wind power, the large chimney next to it is part of the steam engine that was installed around 1900, and in one of the outbuildings, there is an electric mill. You can visit the mill by appointment.

The history of the mill dates back to 1768, but the current building dates from 1888. Ter Geest and Te Zande is a post mill, a tall mill with a platform halfway up. From that platform, the miller attaches the sails to the blades and turns the mill towards the wind.

Post mills are usually found in places with a lot of buildings: the blades need to be high enough above the houses to catch the wind.

Ter Geest and Te Zande serves as an oil mill and grain mill. In 1896, the first steam engine was added to make production less dependent on the wind. In 1914, a second steam engine followed, but at the end of World War I, the mill was severely damaged. By 1919, it was turning again. There were further restorations in 1964, 1980, and 2005.

The name is a contraction referring to two older mills: 'Ter Geest' and 'Te Zande'. Since 1944, the mill has been protected as a monument.

The mill no longer grinds, but you can visit it by making an appointment with the owner. A lot of interesting things from the old installations have been preserved.
