The belfry of Menin has an eventful history, which you can still clearly see in the building. Since 1999, it has been recognized by Unesco as a World Heritage Site.
The first stone of the belfry was laid in 1574, but due to the Wars of Religion, the city had to stop the construction two years later. It was not until 1610 that the masons started working again. On top of the substructure, which is built in natural stone, there will be a brick superstructure, and on top of that a wooden spire with a domed roof and a lantern. Twice, in 1706 and 1794, the spearhead was shot down by French troops. One floor will be added each time the repairs are carried out, which is why the building now has four floors.
