The current name comes from the toponym "Neerhouck" in the land book of Oeselgem (1770). The name Neerhoek probably comes from its function as a flood plain of the Lys. Earlier names were said to be "Moorgerek" (black, dirty swamp) for the southwestern part and "Losgat" for the northeastern part.
The Neerhoek, an artificial island between the Old Lys and the New Lys
The historic or Oude Leie flowed downstream from the Oeselgem church along a winding route. There were three meanders with the Neerhoek, the Ham and the Ponthoek in the inner bends. The first and the last were in Oeselgem; the middle one in Olsene. In the skipper's circle, people spoke of the "Crooked Waters." The skippers needed a day to sail through those meanders. In order to make inland shipping run more smoothly, a canal was dug right through the meanders in 1938. It shortened the original route of 6.5 kilometers to one and a half km.
The two monuments that stand there refer to the fallen in the Second World War and to the Neerhoek as an island between the old Lys and the new Lys.
