Fisherwomen at Ostend railway station

This sculpture is located at the Statoinsplein in Ostend.

This series of pictures in front of the train station is entitled "Ode to the Fisherwomen". There are five bronze statues, two meters high . The sculptural group was officially inaugurated in 1998.

It was made by artist Gust Michiels.

Anyone coming from Ostend station or going to the station will immediately recognize five seated women , figures that symbolize the themes of the artist's work. Women with strong facial features and typical shapes reminiscent of majestic mermaids , with elongated and flattened noses , large eyes and accentuated eyebrows that form two elegant arches with the nose . The arms continue this movement. Updo hairstyles are the culmination of this elegance. Women have round mouths like a fish. They speak silently of the sea as heard in its ebb and flow.
