Parish Church of Saint Martin - Herzele

The origins of the church probably date back to the 10th century , although the exact construction history is unknown.

In 1147, the church was transferred under Lord Baldwin of Herzele to the Abbey of Saint-Ghislain in Hainaut. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the church retained its medieval volume. Between 1912 and 1914, the church was redesigned and rebuilt by architect Henri Valcke , with a neo-Gothic western extension being realized.

Typical are the stained glass windows with spires and the tracery. They were made by Mr. Hendrik Coppejans. The middle painting represents Calvary, to the left of it hangs the Apparition of the Sacred Heart to Margaretha Alacoque and to the right of it is the Last Supper at Emmaus .

The church is dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours , a contemporary of Saint Livinus . Although the church is dedicated to Saint Martin, devotion to Livinus plays an important role in the village. In the southern transept is a relic of Saint Brixius , son of Livinus, which is carried in the procession during the Livinus festivals .
