The square has been named since 1883 after the 19th-century Flemish writer Hendrik Conscience, of whom a statue has been placed in the square. Before that, it was referred to as the Jesuit Square.
The partly 17th-century buildings around the square are characterized by a baroque style. This is especially true for the impressive Saint Charles Borromeo Church, a former Jesuit church. The baroque style of the buildings around the square, with much splendor and pomp, was deliberately encouraged by the Jesuits: as part of the Counter-Reformation, the order sought to stimulate the population in various ways to come to the churches.
