Berge Monastery

The Monastery of St. John the Baptist on the Mountain was an important Benedictine abbey near the city of Magdeburg, near Buckau. In 1565 it was transformed into a Protestant monastery. It existed as a Protestant monastery school until the beginning of the 19th century.
The exact year of foundation of Berge Abbey is not known, but it is assumed that the year 955 was associated with the beginning of the new construction begun by Otto I - the later Magdeburg Cathedral. The planned conversion of the Moritz Monastery, which had been founded in 937, into the Archbishopric of Magdeburg, which was carried out in 968, made it necessary to establish a spiritual body into which the monks who were not to enter the cathedral monastery could move. The first documentary mention of the monastery is dated 12 April 965. However, the authenticity of this document, which includes the donation of tithes from some East Elbe villages to the "flourishing monastery" of John the Baptist by Emperor Otto I, is doubted. However, it is undisputed that Otto I documents dated 14 and 17 January 970 are documented. The first is granted to the monastery the free election of abbot, the second document deals with donations to the monastery.
