Calvary Hill in Füssen

The Calvary Hill of Füssen is a Calvary and Stations of the Cross in Füssen in the district of Ostallgäu. It was built between 1837 and 1842 on a hill opposite the old town on the right side of the Lech River and was subsequently expanded until around 1900. The ascent begins in the valley at the Church of Our Lady on the mountain.

Füssen's Calvary Hill uniquely combines religion, nature, and art. The Calvary Hill was created in the 19th century. The initiator was the then parish priest Johann Baptist Graf. Graf's religious life was in the tradition of Johann Michael Sailer and Christoph von Schmid. When Hohenschwangau Castle was renovated and redesigned, many painters found work in the castle and later in the design of the chapels.
