Dömitz Road Bridge

The Dömitz Road Bridge is a 970 m long bridge over the Elbe River. The building to the west of Dömitz is part of Bundesstraße 191 from Uelzen to Ludwigslust and is the only road bridge on the 115 km stretch between Wittenberge and Lauenburg. It has two lanes and connects the two banks. The clear height for vessels is 8 m at the highest navigable water level.
A first building was built from 1934 to 1936 and destroyed by an air raid in 1945. During the Cold War, the Elbe served as the natural border between the two Germanys. Reconstruction was possible with German reunification. The work took place in 1991 and 1992. The first bridge after this reunification was opened to traffic on December 18, 1992. It has become a symbol of reunification.
