In the year 842, the place was first mentioned as "Negelstete". Around 1200, the Lords of Döllstedt already had possessions in the area. In 1222, the Teutonic Order, Ballei Thuringia, acquired an estate in Nägelstedt with the patronage rights over St. George's Church. The Order consolidated its position in the region by expanding this estate into the Commandery of Nägelstedt. The Commandery became the administrative center for a number of places within a radius of twenty kilometers. The Order remained in Nägelstedt until its dissolution in 1809.
In the Peasants' War, the upper village inhabited by free, prosperous farmers and its St. Michael's Church were destroyed. Even in 1540, during a visitation held in connection with the introduction of the Reformation, St. Michael's Church and its rectory were deemed to be in ruins. In the 16th/17th century, St. Michael's Church was rebuilt.
