Memorial December 1, 2020 - Trier

On December 1, 2020 , a tragic incident occurred in Trier where a motorist deliberately drove into pedestrians in the city center.

Five people, including a 9-month-old baby, were killed and several others were injured. The driver, a 51-year-old man, was arrested and there are indications that he was under the influence and possibly had psychiatric problems .

In memory of the victims, a memorial was erected in Trier on December 1, 2024. From 1:46 p.m., the bells of the cathedral rang for four minutes. That is how long the attack lasted. The monument is located at the site of the incident in the city's pedestrian zone. It serves as a place of reflection and remembrance for both residents and visitors.

The monument, created by artist Clas Steinmann , consists of a group of large bronze steles between which one can walk. In the middle of the steles are small niches for candles.
