MI-Hille: Star tour 1 through the Hiller Moor

From here, you will drive the first section along the Bastau, a small stream that will accompany you for a long stretch on your tour. After a short detour through a typical residential area in Minden, you will continue along the Bastau through the Bastau meadows to Rothenuffeln. The Bastau meadows are a nature reserve and, together with the Großes Torfmoor, Neuenbaumer Moor, and Alten Moor, form an extensive peat bog.

In Rothenuffeln, you will pass through the spa park, where a half-timbered ensemble consisting of the historic Heuerlingshaus, a separate kitchen building, and the cultural barn has been built. The cultural barn is regularly used for various events. Then your path winds through the small villages of Oberlübbe, Unterlübbe, and Eickhorst. Along the way, you will pass by the Eickhorst windmill, which regularly opens its doors for popular milling and baking days.

A short distance further, you will cross the familiar Bastau in Aspel and head directly into the Großes Torfmoor nature reserve. After a few meters, you will turn left at the Geestmoordamm hiking parking lot and can discover the stark beauty of the high moor in all its glory. The Großes Torfmoor is the largest remaining moor of its kind in NRW. After a short distance, you will discover the observation tower, from which you will have a great panoramic view of the moor. From there, you will drive through the Großes Torfmoor with the Mittelland Canal to your right until you reach the P3 and cross the canal.

The tour continues along the Mittelland Canal and back towards Südhemmern. Depending on your mood and fitness level, it is worth making a detour to Hille and visiting the Alte Brennerei in Hille, which was still in operation until 1990, from the outside. In Südhemmern, a stop at the Südhemmern windmill is worthwhile. Here too, you can enjoy Westphalian specialties on milling and baking days and experience the charm of this historic building ensemble live.

On your way back to Minden along the Mittelland Canal, you will pass by Hahler Hafen, where a small restaurant invites you to linger. Just before reaching your destination, you will see two absolute highlights in Minden: the historic boat lift, right next to it the newer Weser lock, where most of the locks between the Weser and the Mittelland Canal are now carried out, and the largest double waterway intersection in the world.
