The 51 km long circular tour starts in the monastery village
Ebstorf and leads you through small heath villages to Rockenmühle. According to a legend, the local grain
and oil mill was destroyed in the 18th century at the behest of the bailiff,
because the tenants did not take care of it enough. Later it was
rebuilt and is now in family ownership. Shortly after Rockenmühle, a detour to the
Addenstorfer Heath is worthwhile: Here is a Bronze Age burial mound field (approx. 1500
BC) with 45 burial mounds preserved. Cycling on to Medingen via Jelmstorf. Whether
Jelmstorfer Wolf or evil bailiff - in both places legends offer a glimpse into
the eerie past. In Medingen, a must-see: the Heath Monastery.
It houses valuable treasures such as the Abbess's crozier from 1494, the golden
reliquary statue of St. Mauritius (15th century), old silver and porcelain. Guided tours:
Tel. 05821-96 78 38. Continuing northwards to Wichmannsburg,
idyllically situated in the valley of the Ilmenau. In the town center stands the over 1000-year-old
church with beautiful fieldstone masonry and round-arched windows on the north wall. From Wichmannsburg you can reach Bienenbüttel directly.
At the canoe dock, the approximately 4 km long sculpture path begins, winding its way with the
Ilmenau to Grünhagen. Here, 12 sculptures made of
wood, metal, and stone blend into the natural surroundings. Next stop: Hanstedt I with the historic
water mill, once an oil and grain mill from 1368. Its mill technology is
fully preserved and can be visited by appointment (H. Müller, Tel.
05822-39 15). In Hanstedt, be sure to stop at the small fieldstone church: It
dates back to 980 and is open to visitors in the summer. Inside there is a
gold-adorned altarpiece, richly illustrated windows, and the elaborately
carved pulpit to see. Tip: In Hanstedt I, the
Resurrection Path with paintings and Bible texts as well as the Path of Inspiration with
pictures, meditative texts, and Bible quotes start or end. Both paths are suitable for hiking and
cycling. The last stage leads back to Ebstorf. In the
town center, the Pharmacy Museum from 1822 (upon request, Tel. 05822-3941)
and the medieval monastery with its art treasures and the faithful reproduction of the
Ebstorf World Map from the 13th century await you. Tel. 05822 - 2304.
