Santuario de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles - Denia

The Santuario de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles (also known as the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles ) is a historic and picturesque sanctuary located near the Cape of Sant Antoni, close to the border area between Dénia and Jávea (Xàbia) .

The history of this place began around 1380 , when pious friars and hermits settled on this remote cape. They sometimes carved small dwellings into the rocks themselves or lived in extreme simplicity to devote themselves entirely to meditation. The name and veneration of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles (Our Lady of the Angels) were historically very popular among seafarers and fishermen. Before venturing the dangerous crossing to Ibiza or further waters, they often prayed here for a safe voyage and protection against storms at sea.

Like many historical sites in this region, the sanctuary has known hard times. During conflicts throughout the centuries (including the War of Spanish Succession and subsequent looting), the complex was damaged or abandoned more than once , after which it was restored each time by local believers and brotherhoods.

The complex consists of a simple but charming white church/hermitage (ermita) that has been modified over the centuries. It exudes the serene and peaceful atmosphere of the Montgó mountains.

Unlike many other old hermit churches in the region that are closed year-round, this complex is still fully in use today. It serves as a Casa de Espiritualidad (spiritual center) and is managed by an order of sisters (the Hijas de Santa María del Corazón de Jesús ). Retreats, prayer meetings, and silent weeks are held there.

Every year around August 2, the Festes de la Mare de Deu dels Àngels takes place here. This is a beloved and traditional festival where locals from Jávea and the surrounding area flock to the cape. There is a solemn mass, a traditional procession with the historic painting of the Virgin , and typical regional products such as coca maría (a local sweet cake) and mistela (local sweet wine) are distributed.
