Greve's triangular square is most likely the site of the original market around which Greve has grown over the past 500 years. One of its attractions are the arched loggias along the three sides, which provide welcome shade to shoppers in summer. The Church of Santa Croce, which houses some beautiful paintings by the school of Fra Angelico, is on the southern tip of the piazza, and an avenue of shops opens onto the northern side. Today Piazza Matteotti is the commercial center of Greve with a large number of interesting shops selling wine, ceramics, furniture, handicrafts and all kinds of foodstuffs. There are also several restaurants. On Saturday morning there is a large market in the square with fruit and vegetables, a wide range of clothing, tools, kitchen utensils, etc.
A fine statue of Giovanni Verrazzano dominates Piazza Matteotti and there is a bronze statue of dubious taste that is in place at the main entrance of the town hall. Various events are held in the piazza throughout the year, the most interesting of which are the antique fair, the Chianti Classico wine festival and the flower festival.
