The Nobelpoort is one of the three remaining city gates of the Dutch city of Zierikzee. The gate is situated inland and dates from the middle of the 14th century. The origin of the name is uncertain, it is probably a family name. Originally, there was a drawbridge in front of the gate. Until 1866 the gates were closed every evening.
The story goes that there were two Nobel sisters, one of whom was crooked. Furthermore, the sisters are said to have disputed how many parts the roofs of the towers of the gate should be composed of. This explains that the roof of the right tower is composed of several parts and that the right spire is also slightly curved.
