The Schelphoek was created during the flood disaster in 1953. The gap in the dike at this location initially seemed manageable, but in the months following the disaster, it only grew larger. This resulted in August, half a year after the disaster, in an area measuring 520 meters wide and 38 meters deep. A ring dike, over four kilometers long, was then constructed around the area and was closed with caissons.
Over two hundred hectares of farmland were lost as a result.
The last caisson installed still protrudes above the dike and serves as an excellent observation point.
Today, aside from its history, the creek area is rich in plants and animals.
Shortly after the disaster, Staatsbosbeheer planted a forest here, and more than sixty species of birds breed, including nightingales, great spotted woodpeckers, and owls.
In the spring, hawthorn bushes and old hollyhocks grow here, and at the bottom of the lower-lying creek, you will find samphire and sea asparagus.
Thanks to the salt present in the inland creek, it almost never freezes over, so you will always encounter waterbirds even in winter. There’s a good chance you’ll see the little grebe diving underwater for food.
Outside the dike, depending on the season, you will encounter thousands of coastal birds. It is advisable, if you are a bird enthusiast, to carry binoculars with you at this location.
There is a marked walking route around the inland creek and along the dike, and for children, a fun treasure hunt walk has been set up.
