Mitselwier is a small village in the municipality of Noardeast-Fryslân; the village originated on a terp that was raised several centuries before the Christian era. It later developed into a ring village. In the late Middle Ages, the area around Mitselwier was reclaimed from the sea, and dikes were built to protect the land from flooding.
Since the end of the 18th century, it has been the main place of the municipality of Oostdongeradeel where the town hall was located.
Mitselwier used to have three manors. The most important, Ropta State, was located one kilometer north of the village. Directly west of the Reformed Church was Unia State, which had a moat around it, part of which is still present. To the southwest of the church was Wibalda State, but nothing remains of this manor.
On the north side of the village stands the small station that served as a stop for the local railway 'It Dokkumer Lokaeltsje' which operated from 1912 to 1936.
