Soldiers and theatre!
These are the keywords of this route that goes from the village square in Austerlitz to the church of the Lage Vuursche. Austerlitz owes its existence to the troops of the French army who were stationed here in the woods around 1804. They certainly did not make theatre, but this route also introduces you to two special, albeit small, but very fine locations where theatre is made possible: The Beaforthuis and as an absolute highlight The Herman van Veen Arts Center on Landgoed De Paltz is Soest.
Not only the French troops left their mark in this region, so did the Russian Cossacks who were expelled from the city for misconduct in the city of Utrecht and exiled to the forests of Austerlitz. You can get acquainted with the history of the Dutch Armed Forces in the National Military Museum that you reach after you have crossed the former runway of Soesterberg Air Base.
Over the slopes of Landgoed De Paltz and over the avenues of the Pijnenburg Estate we finally arrive in De Lage Vuursche where, provided the princess is at home, we can once again see soldiers at work. The Royal Netherlands Marechaussee keeps watch at the gate of Drakensteyn Castle.
