The castle was founded in the early fourteenth century by Count Reinoud I of Guelders. Until 1516 it almost always remained the residence of the Gelderland lords. The Emma pyramid is an ancient lookout mountain. The summit is located on the Kluizenaarsweg and is 98 meters high. The lookout mountain was built in 1891 as a job creation project. From this mountain it was checked whether there were forest fires anywhere in the area. Later, the name of the lookout mountain changed to Emma Hill, after the then reigning Queen Emma. Even later, a wooden watchtower was built on the Emma hill to be able to look even further. Because of the wooden ramparts that were placed on the hill to prevent earth subsidence, the hill looked a bit like a pyramid. And that's how the name Emmapiramide came about.
