Mustang Valley is a high-altitude region in northern Nepal, in Gandaki Province, just north of the main Himalayan range and close to the Tibetan border. It lies in the Kali Gandaki valley between the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs, with Upper Mustang forming the northern, more restricted part of the district.
It was long closed to foreigners, which helped preserve its Tibetan-influenced culture and the old Kingdom of Lo heritage. It has a striking trans-Himalayan landscape: dry, wind-swept, and desert-like because it sits in the rain shadow of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. It is geologically and visually dramatic, with eroded canyons, layered rock formations, and the Kali Gandaki gorge, one of the deepest river gorges in the world. It is also important for trekking, cultural travel, and pilgrimage, especially around places like Lo Manthang and Muktinath.
Mustang District is in northern Nepal in Gandaki Province. It stretches from lower valleys around Jomsom up to Upper Mustang near the Tibetan border; the district covers about 3,573 km² and has very high elevations, from roughly 1,372 m to 8,167 m.
