The statue of Marechal Gomes da Costa, inaugurated on May 28, 1966 , was erected to pay tribute to Marechal Gomes da Costa.
Manuel Gomes da Costa was a Portuguese soldier and politician, tenth President of the Republic and second of the dictatorship, born in Lisbon on 14 January 1863 and died in the same city on 17 December 1929. He became popularly known for leading the uprising of 28 May 1926 , in which Braga took command of his army and marched to Lisbon with the aim of carrying out the military coup d'état that would end the First Republic, inaugurate a period of Military Dictatorship and later make possible the Estado Novo regime.
The statue was designed by sculptor Salvador Barata Feyo and shows Marshal Gomes da Costa in his military uniform with a baton in his hands, resting on a granite pedestal with the inscription "AO MARECHAL GOMES DA COSTA".d in his military uniform.
