Vikings at the Swedish History Museum
Meet the Vikings – legendary, misunderstood and feared. Discover stories of impressive women and men, Norse gods, Viking trading and raiding, and life in the town of Birka. We have the world’s largest collection of finds from the Viking era at the Swedish History Museum. Thousands of objects tell stories about women, children and men living during what we call the Viking age.
The Vikings are possibly best known as brutal robbers. Today there are many pictures and stories about the Vikings. They describe how they travelled around the world frightening the life out of people. This is not the true story of the Vikings.
The Vikings were mostly peaceful traders. However, most of the people who lived in the Nordic Countries during this period were not Vikings. They were farmers, hunters and craftsmen. The exhibition does include weapons, but it also includes many objects which give a different picture, telling the story of everyday activities, religious beliefs and family life.
New research reveals that strong women ruled the households and were sometimes powerful members of a diverse society. But it was also a society of great social differences. A lot of those who lived a thousand years ago never left any traces.
