The statue of Gustav III is a sculpture representing Gustav III of Sweden, created by Johan Tobias Sergel between 1790 and 1806. The statue has stood at Skeppsbrokajen opposite Slottsbacken in Stockholm since 1808.
The statue of Gustav III is a gift from the citizens of Stockholm to the king, who had already erected an obelisk at Slottsbacken to thank the citizens for their support during the Russo-Swedish War of 1788-1790.
The statue was sculpted by Johan Tobias Sergel, who drew inspiration for its pose and movement from the ancient statue of Apollo of Belvedere.
The statue was cast in bronze in 1806 by Captain Charles Apelquist in Marieberg after two failed attempts by the Meyer foundry. The quay and the pedestal were designed and built by Jonas Lidströmer. The statue was only unveiled on January 24, 1808. On the same day, Sergel was knighted by Gustav IV Adolf of Sweden.
In 2005-2006, the statue was restored. During this restoration, it was found that the statue was made of solid bronze from above up to its chest.
