El nombre 'Sault' se deriva del latín 'Saltus', que significa 'tierra de bosques'. Las excavaciones han demostrado que el Sault moderno tiene sus orígenes en tiempos prehistóricos. Al noreste de Sault, en el Bois du Défens, se han excavado objetos de tiempos prehistóricos en las cercanías de una cueva.
